How we forecast Linux release dates

Many sources, one date. Strongest first.

  1. 1
    Official schedules

Dates a project publishes itself, like Ubuntu's release schedule and the GNOME calendar. These become Scheduled.

    Official
  2. 2
    Release feeds

kernel.org, Fedora's update system, the Debian archive, Ubuntu's upgrade data and the Linux Mint archive. Checked automatically every day; this is how a page flips to released.

    Checked daily
  3. 3
    Code tags and test builds

Release candidates, alphas and betas tagged in the project's code, like Linux rc1 or GNOME beta. Each one tightens the forecast.

    Checked daily
  4. 4
    Mailing lists and announcements

Go/no-go meetings, freeze dates and slips announced by the developers.

    Official
  5. 5
    News reports

Linux news sites often spot slips and new names first. We label them report and never treat one report as a confirmed date.

    Report
  6. 6
    Release history

When nothing is announced, we use the project's past release gaps to give a window and a chance %. These are Expected.

How do you forecast Linux release dates?

We combine official schedules, release feeds, code tags, mailing lists and news reports with each project's past release history. Dates the project published are marked scheduled; our own estimates are marked predicted and come with a chance %.

Are the downloads safe?

We never host or change files. Every download button sends you to the project's own website or servers, where you can also check the official checksums.
